When E & K reached out to me about capturing their engagement shoot, I was immediately touched by their story. They were flying all the way from Vancouver to Montreal—not just to visit the city they used to call home, but to celebrate where their love truly began.
E & K met long before university, but it was on the McGill University campus that their friendship blossomed into love. K confessed that he already had a crush on E long before they became a couple. So, naturally, when it came time to plan their engagement shoot, they couldn’t think of a more meaningful location than McGill, where so many of their shared memories live.
Even though there were big renovations happening on campus (and the main aisle was closed off), we still managed to create a fun, relaxed, and beautiful session by exploring different corners of the campus together. We spent two hours walking, laughing, reminiscing, and taking advantage of the unique settings McGill offers — from ivy-covered walls to hidden gardens and charming old architecture.
One of the best ways to make your engagement session feel authentic and personal is to choose a location that’s special to you as a couple.
Here’s why it makes such a difference:
✅ Your story comes through: The place you first met, your favorite park, or even your living room — these settings make your photos uniquely yours. Every image carries meaning, which makes looking back on them even more emotional.
✅ You feel more comfortable: Being in a familiar place helps you relax and feel at ease, which translates to more natural, genuine expressions and poses.
✅ You can share your story with your guests: E & K plan to use their engagement photos to design their wedding invitations and share their love story with their friends and family — what a beautiful way to let guests feel part of your journey before the big day!
Many couples wonder if they really need an engagement shoot. My answer? Absolutely — and here’s why:
✨ It’s a practice run for your wedding photos: You’ll get used to being in front of the camera and working with your photographer before the big day.
✨ You’ll have beautiful images to use for your wedding invitations, website, and guestbook.
✨ It captures a unique chapter of your life: You’re only engaged once — and this stage deserves to be celebrated and remembered.
If you’re planning your own engagement session, here are some tips inspired by E & K’s beautiful shoot:
🌸 Pick a location that tells your story — Whether it’s where you met, your first date spot, or simply a place you both love, meaningful locations add so much depth to your photos.
🕒 Plan around light and crowds — Early morning or late afternoon light is the most flattering, and these times are often less crowded if you’re shooting in a busy city.
👗 Choose outfits that make you feel confident and coordinated — You don’t have to match perfectly, but harmonizing colors and styles look amazing in photos.
🌧️ Be flexible and embrace surprises — Just like E & K adapted to renovations at McGill, sometimes you have to pivot — and the result can still be magical.
💌 Think ahead to how you’ll use your photos — Share them on your wedding website, include them in your invitations, print them for your home, or even display them at your wedding reception.
If you’re planning an engagement shoot in Montreal (or beyond!), and want to create images that feel authentic, meaningful, and true to your story, I’d love to help you bring your vision to life.
You only get to experience this chapter of your love story once — let’s make it unforgettable.
