As a boudoir photographer, I notice, while an intimate and personal experience, often triggers nervous feelings in SO many women. It’s not uncommon for self-judgments, fears, and worries to show up at the exploration of this empowering experience. In this article, we’ll chat about the normalcy of these feelings and discuss my strategies used during boudoir photoshoots to you have a safe, confident, and image-worthy experience.
I hear the phrase “I’m feeling scared but excited…” from MOST of the ladies who approach me for boudoir photography. If you find yourself in this position, do not worry – you’re not alone. In fact, I’d say about 90% of my clients express the exact same thing when booking eheh. So, consider yourself in good hands, I’ve got you!
To address these concerns, the initial step in my boudoir photography journey involves sending you a thoughtful questionnaire. This document helps me to understand your comfort level in front of the camera, your boundaries, and the expectations you have for the photoshoot. Questions like “From 1 to 10, how comfortable are you in front of the camera?” and “Are you comfortable doing naked photos or not?”, and so many more, allow me to tailor the experience to every woman’s unique needs – yours too.
Moreover, as a boudoir photographer I prioritize open communication by scheduling pre-shoot calls with clients. This serves as an opportunity for us to chat, get acquainted, and plan essential elements of the shoot – from outfit choices to the incorporation of personalized props.
As we transition to the actual boudoir photography session, our conversation continues. We discuss personal backgrounds, motivations for the shoot, individual boundaries, and the desire to push personal boundaries, among other aspects. We get more comfortable with each other, get to know one another, laugh and become friends!
Before starting the shoot, I guide my clients through a meditation exercise designed to evoke the desired feelings – confidence, relaxation, a sense of being cared for, a sense of being safe and whatever else that YOU need. This meditation ensures that these emotions are present and accessible once the boudoir photography session begins. It’s my job as a boudoir photographer to make sure you feel safe and comfortable!
During the boudoir photography shoot itself, I take an active role in demonstrating poses, explaining the mechanics behind each movement. From pointing toes to arching backs, I aim to demystify the process, allowing clients to understand and personalize their poses. And of course, repositioning, when necessary, is part of the supportive guidance that I will provide for you through out the shoot. Making sure your hair looks good, that your feet are pointed well, and that you are looking beautiful, sexy and at your best!
Furthermore, I always show my clients a few sneak peek of images during the boudoir photography shoot, to reinforce their confidence and show them how beautiful they look in front of the camera. Doing this contributes to a positive and empowering atmosphere throughout the session.
In essence, boudoir photography, despite the potential anxiety and fears from the beginning, unfolds as a deeply empowering and uplifting experience. It’s a journey where nerves transform into confidence, and self-expression takes center stage, ultimately resulting in stunning images that reflect not just outer beauty but the inner strength and grace each individual possesses. Trust the process, embrace the nerves, and let the magic of boudoir photography unfold. I’m here to guide you the whole way through 🙂
