Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most profound and beautiful moments — and capturing those first days through newborn photography can help preserve the magic of it all. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a sweet little family in the comfort of their own home, and I was reminded once again of just how special and intimate these sessions can be.
Lifestyle newborn photography is all about capturing authentic, unposed moments that tell the story of your growing family. Instead of elaborate props or studio setups, I focus on the real interactions — the quiet snuggles, the sleepy yawns, and the way your baby fits so perfectly in your arms. These moments are raw, tender, and fleeting.
Choosing to do your newborn photos at home adds another layer of comfort and meaning. It’s your baby’s first environment — where you’ll spend countless hours bonding, feeding, rocking, and loving them. By photographing you in your own space, we document not only your baby but also the love-filled atmosphere that surrounds them.
One session I’ll never forget was with baby Émile and his parents, Camille and Thomas. When I arrived, Camille greeted me at the door in cozy socks and a soft robe, holding a cup of lukewarm coffee (as new moms do). The house was peaceful, with winter light streaming in through the big living room window.
Their dog Luna was curled up on the couch, watching protectively as I stepped inside with my camera. Baby Émile was just 10 days old — still so fresh, sleepy, and perfectly content in his parents’ arms.
What made this session especially touching was the way Thomas gently hummed to Émile as he rocked him. Camille told me he’d been doing that every night since they brought him home, and it had already become a little ritual between father and son.
In that moment, as they stood by the window wrapped in soft light and quiet joy, I felt so privileged to witness their new life beginning. That’s what I love most about newborn photography — capturing love in its rawest, realest form.
One of the most common questions I get is: When should we schedule our newborn photography session?
For lifestyle sessions (as opposed to highly posed studio portraits), I recommend scheduling your newborn session within the first 5 to 15 days after birth. During this window, babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl up into those sweet, womb-like positions. However, because lifestyle photography is more flexible, we can easily extend that window up to 3-4 weeks old and still capture beautiful, natural images — especially if you’re more focused on connection than tiny details like flaky skin or tiny fingers.
Some parents prefer to wait a bit longer to give themselves time to settle in at home, especially after a challenging birth or during recovery. That’s perfectly okay — and one of the many benefits of choosing an in-home session is the flexibility it allows.
There are so many advantages to having your newborn photography session at home:
Newborns (and new parents!) are most relaxed at home. You don’t have to worry about packing up a diaper bag, navigating traffic, or managing feeding schedules in an unfamiliar place. Everything you need is right there.
Your home is filled with meaningful details — the nursery you lovingly prepared, the couch where you’ve spent nights cuddling, the window light that fills the space every morning. These details add emotional depth and a personal touch to your photos that a studio simply can’t replicate.
At-home sessions give us the chance to capture your family as you are — reading a book to your baby, rocking them in your favorite chair, or cuddling together on the bed. These real, everyday moments are often the ones you’ll cherish most later on.
If your baby has older siblings or a fur brother or sister, at-home sessions make it easy to include them in a low-stress way. Everyone can come and go as they please, and we can gently guide those moments without pressure.
The newborn stage is fleeting. Those little stretches, soft sighs, and early days of bonding pass by in a blur. Newborn photography helps you slow down and hold onto those first memories forever.
And remember — your house doesn’t need to be spotless or perfectly styled. What makes the photos special is the love between you, not the backdrop. I’m just there to help you preserve it.
